Les verbes pour la glace
Tu veux manger de la glace? Alors, apprends les verbes!
So many verbs, so little time! In the first and second year curriculums, students learn many verbs types (-er, -ir, -re, irregular, reflexive) and tenses (present, near future, imperative, past perfect and past continuous). That's a lot to do in one school year! Les verbes pour la glace, or ice cream verbs, is a way to encourage students to learn all of these verbs.
Almost every Friday, an ice cream quiz is given over whatever verb type or tense that we are currently learning. Students who pass the quiz earn a component of an ice cream sundae (as indicated below). These quizzes are NOT grades in my grade book; they are only for building each student's sundae. Students may re-take a quiz as many times as necessary to pass it. Once we have moved on to the next verb as a class, students who still need to re-take a quiz will need to come in early to do so.
In May, students will have an ice cream party at which they get to eat whatever they have earned!

FAQs
How do I pass a quiz? In French 1, students must earn a 90 or better to pass a quiz. In French II, students must earn a 100 on the two quizzes that cover level 1 verbs. All subsequent quizzes may be passed with a 90 or better. Does spelling count? Yes! That's the point! What if I don't pass the first time I take a quiz? No problem, you can take them as many times as you need to. Some weeks, especially first semester, we will have time the next Friday to repeat the quiz (a different version, of course). If we have to move on to another quiz (especially second semester), you will need to make an appointment to come in early one morning to re-take it. If I don't like toppings or ice cream do I still have to take the quiz? Yes! The point of the quizzes is to help you learn all of these verbs so that when you go on to the next level of French you will feel confident and prepared. Besides, all of these verbs will be on your final exams so think of this as preparation and continuous review. The ice cream and/or toppings is just an added bonus! |
What if I haven't earned everything when we have the ice cream party?
You get to eat only whatever you have earned. Make sure you earn your bowl and spoon because you can't bring these with you from home. What do I earn for each quiz?
